32 - Winter (1/300 goal)

Winter's whispers stop and
he starts to yell.

31 - Sun

The sun
makes me blissfully blind
to my computer screen.

30 - Revenge

I justify not having
moments of paying close attention
with "I'm too busy,"
and realize life is also
too busy to pay attention
to me.

29 - Tears

Face down in the middle of the road
pleading to be covered by the snow
a cat, once suffering,
lay broken backed, unloved, forgotten,
and lifeless, bringing me to tears.

Not all small stones are happy.

28 - Car

Smoothe acceleration
smoothe operator

27 - Dust

The dust cracked my hands
keeping the Grand Canyon in my heart

26 - Cheese

So desperately concerned with the
fate of the cheese
he mewls a plea;
this from the mute cat.

Okay okay so a little info on this one.  I have four cats I affectionately refer to as 'The Pride', one of which has been a silent addition to my family since I bottle fed him. The only noises he has every made were truly no more than a crooning noise made with his mouth closed and a slight up lift of his chest.  He yelped once when I set a chair down on his foot accidentally, however no other sounds have ever really come from him.  I was cutting a brick of cheese today for supper and I had him and another cat watching intently.  He meowed, and it took me a minute to realize that raspy, half-dead noise had come from him.  I was absolutely amazed.

25 - Oncoming

The deep breath of stale,
circulated air
burns my lungs like it's
my last breath.

24 - Icicles

Perched precariously over a garden
dead from fall past,
winter's rage threatens to fall.

23 - Purr

His purr rolls like thunder.

22 - Giraffe

The blue and white giraffe on my pen
is chipped and jaded.

21 - Truck

Flakes of snow piled like
purified sand dunes against
the flattened white-wall tires
of an almost forgotten 55' GMC truck.

20 - Ignored

The brown book
in which I write my words
has not heard from me in days,
covered by the lotto ticket
that shattered my dreams.

19 - Reflection

The red light tells me there's power
but its not turned on,
yet, I can watch the hockey game
upside down.

18 - Remnants

The decorations
in the soft blue lights
of the Mall's Christmas tree
remind me of smiles and
one baby, very unhappy
with the stranger
in the red suit.

17 - Witness

She's witnessing
the birth of a writer,
I though,
and she doesn't even know it.

16 - Angel

I saw an angel today;
she asked me for directions.
I wonder if God will forgive me
for not knowing the way.

15 - Interrupted

I interrupted a conversation
between Mother Earth and Father time,
and Aurora Borealis stilled my breath.

14 - Extraction

The taste of copper
and the smell of vanilla and pine.

13 - Wisdom Teeth

Despite the extraction
I am wise enough to know
wisdom teeth are attached to ones ears

12 - Needles

Between the clicking needles
the wool slowly rubs away
my fingerprints.

11 - Fairies

Plush, fresh morning snow
lay like silently resting fairies
on the branches of
sleeping trees.

10 - Diamonds

Winter sprinkled diamonds
over orange and purple hills
to catch the sunset's dreams.

9 - Lips

His lips
fell like rain
against my flesh.

8 - Bees

My eyes sting
as though
last night's tears
    were bees.

7 - Morning

Morning whispered
freshly picked necterines
across the sky

6 - Purrfect

Nothing tells you you're loved
  with such few words
as a cat bumping his head against yours.

5 - Walk

It would only take a minute
in the crisp day air -- damn,
should have worn socks.

4 - Pomegranate

I realized
     Pomegranates are best eaten
naked.

Thank you very much, Fiona and Kaspa, for featuring this piece in the river.

3 - Sighting

The light, surrounded
                   fell...
before the others

2 - Orange Pekoe

The uninvited
sit alone    and enjoy
              the warmth of
   Orange Pekoe

1 - Human

He told me
         s t o p
   apologizing for
being
                  human...
